2.0 Show and Tell Breakout Session Notes
Technology Breakout Session 1
Hosts: Jennifer Sullivan and Jill Hurst-Wahl
What is Library 2.0?
- Has to do with sharing information; collaboration
- doing this with the use of technology
- Library 2.0 is where the concept of library is going
- innovation
How does the technology available affect everyone - from 6 year-olds to senior citizens
Nowadays, technology is second nature to us - being able to get information or connect with someone at a moment's notice
- Need to slow down and step back
- Need to observe how technology is changing things - how we look at ethics, privacy
Library 2.0 changes people's access to information
- Before, the librarian was the intermediary between the user and the information
- Now users can get the information themselves
- This scares some people in the profession
Pressure to use these new technologies
- Some people feel as if they are playing catch-up
- Or they are being made to use the technologies even if they are not ready to
- Not all users are ready for 2.0 - they need to learn basics
We need to:
- look at 2.0 technologies in terms of how practical they are to an individual institution/user community
- know the difference between what people expect and what is assumed
It is a disservice not to teach 2.0 to those who need the basics - they still want to be aware of what is out there even if they don't use them
- The same goes with libraries
It is important for an institution to come together to learn 2.0 and not leave anyone behind
We should look at 2.0 tools, explore what is out there and learn them
- What is the return on investment/time/labor if we use these
- What is the value to the user
When teaching 2.0 technologies (or any technology) it's good to find the hook - what is the user interested in and how does the technology help them/enhance their interest
In some places, 2.0 technologies are replacing the traditional website - is there value to this? It depends on the purpose
This generation of kids and teenagers - technology is a part of who they are
- When schools prohibit access to certain technologies - is this protecting them or providing a disservice?
- How can they learn how to function with the technology in this world of technology outside of the bubble of school when they cannot be taught how to properly use them in school
- How can teachers and librarians teach effectively when you can't talk about or access the "bad" sites
